From Russia with Love
Arts Classes Grades 5 - 12
In Memory of Velma Simmons, Arts Educator
These classes are dedicated to the exploration of the performing arts and cultures of people from various nations around the world. Students will participate in music, dance, theater and visual arts lessons taught by experienced professional teaching artists.
Classes are offered Tuesday through Friday, twice a day at 10am and 12pm, and are intended for school groups (not individual instruction).
Performing Arts
Bhangra Dance
Students will learn and actively engage in this popular style of music and dance created in the Punjab region of India, Pakistan and widely performed throughout South Asia, the United States and other parts of the world.
African Dance and Storytelling I, II and III
The history of the African Griot comes to life in this class which combines African storytelling with dance and drumming. This class is offered in three stages. Take one or all three for more in-depth study.
From Russia with Love—Ukrainian Folk Music and Dance
Dance and music cultures of Ukrainia, Russia and the Middle East are
experienced in this class. Students will learn the dances of these regions
and listen to live musicians perform on authentic Slavic and Middle Eastern instruments.
Salsa Samba Cumbia = Zumba
The lively cultures of Latin America and Afro Cuban music and dance are the basis for this energetic aerobic dance called Zumba. Learn basic salsa, samba, cumbia and a little bit of hip hop in this class that is designed for music, dance, fun and fitness.
Visual Arts
The Jazz Age and Picasso
Come and explore the fusion of American jazz, European art and African culture through the eyes of one of the world’s most prolific artists. Students will discover the influence that daring and bold expressions of music, dance and literature can have on visual art from the period that inspired imagination and a new path to the avante garde. Students will create contemporary works of visual art that reflect their interpretation of an African artifact and a well-known French melody.
