Great benefits for our younger patrons!*
2006/2007:
The first in a series of reviews by Kids Club Reporter Jillian Traino. My family and I went to see Annie the night before Thanksgiving. We arrived in the city, where the streets were decorated for the holidays. The night was windy and cold, and as we walked to the theater the glow of the gas lamps stood out, inviting us into the warmth of the lobby. The lobby was a busy with lots of people getting snacks, drinks, and buying souvenirs. We got to our seats in the Family Circle and took in the surroundings and waited for the show to start. The orchestra was tuning up their instruments. They are a key part of any musical, since they add lively music and sound effects to all the scenes. The lights finally dimmed and the show began, taking us back to New York City in the 1930s, where we were introduced to Annie and her friends in the Orphanage. Of all the characters we were introduced to, our favorites were Annie, Molly, and Mrs. Hannigan. They were very good singers and dancers. Mrs. Hannigan's humor and body motions really made the character, the head mistress of the Orphanage, stand out. The sets and costumes were very well done. The final scene in Daddy Warbucks’ Mansion was my favorite, since it was all decorated for Christmas. It was neat to see the various actors and actresses playing multiple characters throughout the play. The orphans, who were very young, did a great job at singing and dancing. While reading the Showcase program book, I learned that Molly and Duffy are sisters in real life, touring together for this production. I couldn’t believe how well behaved the dog (Sandy) was during the scenes in which she appeared. My family and I had a wonderful time. Seeing Annie was a great way to start the holiday season. We are looking forward to being transported back to the Land of Oz, for Wicked in March! Jillian Traino is a 6th grader. She has always been interested in writing, and is eager to review Wicked as she and her friends are big fans of The Wizard of Oz.
